# Import chats

> Bring your conversation history from ChatGPT or Claude into Wirebase.

## Overview

Imported chats appear in your history with their original dates, and you can keep chatting in them with any model.

## Step 1: Export from your old tool

    In ChatGPT, go to **Settings → Data controls → Export data**. OpenAI emails you a `.zip` download link.

    In Claude, go to **Settings → Privacy → Export data**. Anthropic emails you a `.zip` download link.

## Step 2: Import into Wirebase

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Import chats">
    Go to **Settings → Import chats**, or click **Coming from ChatGPT or Claude? Import your chats** in the sidebar.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Drop your export">
    Drop the `.zip` file you were emailed, or the `conversations.json` inside it. Files up to 200 MB are supported.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Wait for it to finish">
    Keep the page open until the import completes. You'll see how many conversations were imported.

## What gets imported

* Conversation text is imported, with original titles and dates.
* Images, files, tool output and account data are **not** imported.
* Your export is read in your browser. Only conversation text is uploaded.
* Importing the same export again skips chats that were already imported.
* Conversations with no messages are left out.
