# Chat basics

> Start conversations, switch models, organize threads and find past chats.

## Start a chat

Click **New Chat** in the sidebar, or press <kbd>⌘</kbd> <kbd>Shift</kbd> <kbd>O</kbd> (<kbd>Ctrl</kbd> <kbd>Shift</kbd> <kbd>O</kbd> on Windows). Type your message in the box at the bottom and press <kbd>Enter</kbd>.

The message box understands more than plain text:

| Do this | To |
| - | - |
| Type `@` | Call an agent, workflow, connector, tool or knowledge base. See [Mentions](/docs/user-guide/chat/mentions). |
| Click the model name | Switch models for the next message. See [Models](/docs/user-guide/chat/models). |
| Click **+** | Attach files or generate an image. See [Files & images](/docs/user-guide/chat/files-and-images). |
| Click the microphone | Dictate your message instead of typing it. |
| Open the tool menu | Choose which tools the assistant may use, and how. See [Tools](/docs/user-guide/chat/tools). |

## Work with a thread

Every conversation is saved as a thread in the sidebar, grouped by **Today**, **Yesterday**, **Last 7 days** and **Older**. Open a thread's menu to:

* **Rename** it.
* **Share & Export**: create a public link, or download as Markdown or JSON, or print. See [Share & export](/docs/user-guide/chat/share-and-export).
* **Move to project**, so it picks up the project's instructions, files and knowledge. See [Projects](/docs/user-guide/chat/projects).
* **Archive Chat** to hide it from the sidebar without deleting it. Archived chats live in **Settings → Archived Chats**.
* **Delete Chat**.

You can also edit a message you sent and resend it, or copy the assistant's last answer with <kbd>⌘</kbd> <kbd>Shift</kbd> <kbd>C</kbd>.

## Search your chats

Press <kbd>⌘</kbd> <kbd>K</kbd> (<kbd>Ctrl</kbd> <kbd>K</kbd>) to search your chat history. Results are grouped by date, and you can preview a conversation before opening it.

## Answers you can check

When the assistant uses a knowledge base, the answer includes numbered citations. Click one to see the passage it came from. When it uses tools such as web search or a connector, each call appears in the conversation. Choose how much of a tool call is shown in **Settings → Chat display**.

## Personalize responses

Open **Settings → User Instructions** (<kbd>⌘</kbd> <kbd>Shift</kbd> <kbd>L</kbd>) to tell the assistant what to call you, what you do, and how you like answers written. These apply to every chat. See [Settings](/docs/user-guide/account/settings).
