# Projects

> Group related chats with shared instructions, files and knowledge.

## Overview

A project is a home for related work, such as a product launch, a client or a research topic. Every chat inside a project automatically uses the project's:

* **Instructions**: how the assistant should respond in every chat in the project.
* **Files**: documents, PDFs or notes any chat in the project can search.
* **Knowledge bases**: knowledge bases from your workspace, attached to the project.

## Create a project

<Steps>
  <Step title="Create the project">
    In the sidebar under **Projects**, click **New project**. Give it a name, an optional description and a color.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add instructions">
    Describe the tone, context and formats the assistant should follow. These are added to every chat in the project.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add files and knowledge">
    Drag files into **Files** (up to 100 MB each), and use **Add knowledge** to attach existing knowledge bases.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Start chatting">
    Type in the project's message box to start a chat inside it.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  Project files are searched with embeddings, which need an OpenAI or OpenRouter key in your organization. Until an admin adds one, files can't be searched.
</Note>

## Move chats in and out

From any chat's menu, choose **Move to project** and pick a project. The chat starts using the project's instructions, files and knowledge from the next message. Choose **Remove from project** to take it out again.

## Share a project

Click **Share** on the project page and choose who has access:

| Who has access | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **Only you** | Private to you. |
| **Everyone in your organization** | Every member can open the project. |
| **A team** | Members of one [team](/docs/admin-guide/people/teams). |

Then choose what they can do: **Chat in the project**, or **Chat and edit instructions, files and knowledge**.

<Info>
  Sharing a project shares its setup, not your conversations. Everyone's chats in a shared project stay private to them.
</Info>

## Delete a project

Deleting a project keeps its chats and moves them out of the project. Attached knowledge bases are not deleted.
