# Tools

> Let the assistant search the web, run code, draw charts, call APIs and use your connectors.

## Tool modes

The tool mode decides how freely the assistant uses tools. Switch it from the tool menu next to the message box, or press <kbd>⌘</kbd> <kbd>P</kbd> (<kbd>Ctrl</kbd> <kbd>P</kbd>).

| Mode | Behavior |
| - | - |
| **Auto** | Decides when to use tools without asking you. |
| **Manual** | Asks your permission before using any tool. You approve or reject each call. |
| **None** | Doesn't use tools. @mentions still work. |

## Choose which tools are available

Open **Tools Setup** from the tool menu to pick which tools the assistant can use. Save combinations you use often with **Save As Preset**, and switch between presets later.

## Built-in tools

    Searches the web and reads pages, so answers can include current information with links. Your admin must turn on **Web Search** and add a search provider key. See [Chat features](/docs/admin-guide/models/chat-features). Use **Search Options** to pass options like the number of results.

    Draws bar, line and pie charts, and interactive tables, directly in the conversation.

  <Accordion title="Code Execution" icon="square-terminal">
    Runs JavaScript or Python to calculate, transform data or plot. Python runs in your browser with Pyodide; it can fetch files over HTTP when the server allows it (CORS). Your admin can turn code execution off.

  <Accordion title="HTTP Request" icon="arrow-left-right">
    Calls a public URL or REST API and reads the response.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Knowledge search" icon="book-open">

## Connector tools

Connectors add tools from outside services, such as creating a GitHub issue or querying a Notion database. Connectors you add, and connectors shared with your organization, appear in the tool menu and the `@` menu. See [Connectors](/docs/user-guide/workspace/connectors).

## See what a tool did

Each tool call appears in the conversation with its request and response. Choose the default detail level in **Settings → Chat display**:

* **Compact**: header only. Click a call to see its request and response.
* **Expanded**: request and response as a readable tree.
* **Debug**: the raw payload, exactly what the tool sent and returned.
